Ema Diak Rise
Ema Diak, Rise is a visual exploration of Oecusse, an isolated exclave of Timor-Leste, rich in culture, resilience, and historical significance. As the birthplace of Portuguese colonialism in Timor, Oecusse remains geographically separated, yet deeply connected through its people’s enduring spirit. Despite facing economic hardship, limited infrastructure, and restricted access to resources rooted in colonial legacies, its Atoni and Bife communities continue to uphold language, traditions, and identity. This project documents how isolation shapes a unique sense of place, belonging, and strength. Through photography, I seek to amplify voices of dignity, challenge perceptions of remoteness, and celebrate Oecusse’s role in the broader Timorese narrative.
