When the Wind Ends

There are no photographs of the wind. Even the classic images of tornadoes sweeping across the American plains feel somewhat false, as if the true essence of the wind were missing. This reveals the difficulty photography faces in representing something so dynamic.

In meteorological terms, wind is simply the movement of air between areas of high and low pressure. Yet for millennia, humans have wondered where it came from, who or what created it. In many cultures, it has been personified by one or more gods, seen as a manifestation of the supernatural—sacrifices were offered to gain its favor.

The wind is an invisible force that escapes the dominant sense of sight in Western culture; it can only be perceived through hearing, touch, and smell.

I began to wonder how this force could be revealed to the eyes—how its presence could be perceived in a visual image, and how it might express itself poetically.

This entire work is built upon nothingness. We trust only what we can see, expecting truth to conform to what is observable. “Show me,” we say.

And yet the wind does not exist—yet it is damnably real.

Everything we take for granted is not so at all. We believe we know something like the wind, but in truth, it confronts us with a deeper reality: without it, we would not exist.

With the wind, the Earth truly comes alive. Winds form the planet’s nervous and circulatory system, distributing energy and information everywhere, bringing warmth and life—creating something out of nothing.

The development of human society, among other things, is deeply tied to this phenomenon. Humanity has always sought to harness and control this force, giving rise to revolutionary inventions.

This project is the natural history of that process—a recognition of something so fundamental to human life.
