“Vassal of the Sky” strings together moments from the cities, xiang, and villages along the shores of the East China Sea, suggesting an on-foot journey through a maritime landscape suffused with collective dreams, longings, and regrets. The phrase 遗憾 (yí hàn) describes a feeling of deep regret, specifically the feeling of missed chances or missed opportunities. I hoped to explore this emotion within my mother's home province of Fujian, as well as arrest the ancient & mythological qualities of the land and their intersection with a post-Cultural Revolution landscape.
