Honorable Mention
I'm filming a project about the banya and water, about the body, and about the changes in my attitude toward nudity. I began filming this story when I started going to the banya regularly with friends. Previously, my attitude toward nudity was heavily influenced by shame and societal notions of a beautiful body. But after pregnancy, I began observing my body and how it had changed, and I began to look at other people's bodies more often without embarrassment. I wanted to learn more about the female body, rejecting the stereotypes about beauty and slimness, so I began documenting myself and my friends. For me, banya is a space where nudity is the norm, even commonplace. Here I see how diverse the body can be, how the body moves, interacts with space, and performs its functions. In the banya with my friends, I feel calm, I focus on our communication, I admire the diversity of bodies, I notice how we interact with each other. I distance myself from my insecurities and my inner male gaze.
