Before Mars

This project dives into how the space race has transformed over the years. Back in the late 60s, it was all about white men working for the U.S. or Soviet governments with one goal—getting to the Moon and planting a flag. Fast forward to today, and the story is completely different. Space exploration has become a global, collaborative effort, with people from all kinds of backgrounds, races, and genders working together—not just to get to Mars but to figure out how we can actually live there.

For the past six years, I’ve been photographing space architects, farmers, doctors, lawyers, designers, chefs, and engineers from four continents. These are the people solving the challenges of getting to Mars, and in doing so, they’re coming up with innovations that make life better right here on Earth. Along the way, it’s been amazing to see and document how many of these pioneers are women—a shift that speaks volumes about how space exploration has opened up to new voices and perspectives, shaping humanity’s next big leap.

The visual language of this project leans into the world of science fiction—a language we all know by heart thanks to decades of comic books, movies, and novels. But underneath that layer of imagination are the real scientists working on some of the biggest challenges we’ve ever faced: figuring out how to grow food in space, build permanent habitats, and keep both our bodies and minds healthy during what’s going to be a years-long journey to Mars and back.
