Historias de vida - life stories

Life Stories emerged from encounters with people who experienced sexual violence in childhood across different regions of Brazil. By obscuring their faces through the burst of a flash, the series proposes a portrait that is both ethical and symbolic: it protects the identities of the subjects while returning to the viewer the responsibility of looking. The work challenges the boundaries between visibility and erasure, using aesthetics as a strategy for both denunciation and care. In light of the alarming data on sexual violence against women and children in Brazil, the project remains urgent and relevant. The visual repetition of the portraits echoes the social repetition of these crimes. More than raising awareness, the work calls on the public to confront this reality as a collective and persistent problem.

Title: Life Stories
Author: Ilana Bar

Description:
Life Stories is a series of portraits of individuals who were victims of sexual violence in childhood, created in different regions of Brazil. The work consists of color photographs, including both portraits and details of the domestic spaces of the portrayed subjects. The images were originally produced in 2012 during a commissioned project for Museu da Pessoa and later edited in 2024, when they were reorganized into an authorial series with a strong ethical, political, and aesthetic dimension.

The project is structured through a direct, repetitive, and symbolic visual approach. In the portraits, the subjects hold a flash in front of their own faces, which bursts into light at the moment the photograph is taken. This gesture conceals their identities—protecting them—while simultaneously returning to the viewer the responsibility of looking. The artist subverts the traditional use of the flash: what is usually meant to reveal becomes, here, a shield.

The excess of light does not reveal but instead creates tension: it disturbs, disrupts, and provokes. The series places the viewer before an ambiguity—between showing and concealing, between care and confrontation—inviting reflection on sexual violence as a collective and structural issue.

More than a decade after its creation, Life Stories remains current. Its images endure over time and continue to resonate as acts of denunciation, memory, and the possibility of critical reflection.
