Road is an ongoing project that utilises photographs taken at night on a remote road in Crete.
The images were taken with an awareness of war crimes that were carried out in the area by the Nazis in 1941. Following the German invasion of the island, fierce resistance from the local population was met with brutal reprisals; villages were razed and hundreds of civilians massacred.
The project is haunted by the consequences of power exercised without moral or legal restraint. It has become a vehicle for channelling anger toward those whose ideologies and influence bring death, injury, and displacement to countless innocent people — and for transforming that anger into creative expression, as an act of communicating grief and outrage.
The original images are developed through an intuitive process of alteration, and the project remains deliberately open-ended: images are added and removed over time as the work continues to evolve. The most recent additions were made in February 2026.
