Healing Out Loud is a black and white self-portrait photography series that challenges the stigma around mental health and neurodivergence. I want it to be a conversation opener and an invitation to a space where others can feel seen without having to explain themselves.
The work pushes back against the stories we have all inherited about what mental illness and neurodivergence looks like, who it belongs to, and what we are supposed to feel when we see it. I keep seeing a pattern in my own life of being welcomed until I became uncomfortable because of my diagnosis, and how my brain function different than the norm, rather than recognised for the the strength, resilience and talent that exist alongside it. This project sits with that and refuses to let it go.
