Mention Honorable
When I was 19, I witnessed the murder of an 18-year-old girl. Five years later, I saw a man run over and killed by a car. These two events left me feeling unstable and paranoid. In 2022, I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Since these events, my life has been turned upside down.
As a photographer, I artistically took charge of my search for stability. I began to make the chaos and disorder of my thoughts and feelings surrounding these traumas visible through conceptual close-up and action portraits. My goal is to confront my reality and heal through photographic self-observation.
The Places I (Long To) Go consists of several narrative layers: close-up portraits, action portraits, and photographs of my surroundings. In this work I enact my thoughts and ways that I identify with the victims, depict therapeutic practices that I undergo such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and document environmental triggers that I encounter throughout my day. These photographs, along with audio recordings in which I describe my fears in a diary-like manner, have become a serious, long-term artistic project in which I address the part of my brain that keeps telling me I am going to die.
