Uncrowded
The harsh, extremely windy, hot, and unforgiving desert landscape, with its mud volcanoes and burning earth. This place near the city of Baku in Azerbaijan was one of the centers of fire worship, the religion of Zoroastrianism. The name “Azerbaijan” may be translated as “Land of Eternal Fire.” In ancient times, fire worshippers built so-called “Towers of Silence” for burial. Bodies were placed on a flat roof so that vultures, an incinerating sun and wind would leave only bones.
