While climate change manifests itself above all in tangible material and human damage, more indirect and sly consequences harm and divide human societies. In Isiolo county, Kenya, climate change is synonymous with heightened inter-ethnic and gender-based violence. The Turkana, Samburu and Borana ethnic groups, who once coexisted peacefully, are now taking up arms, while women and children are the hardest hit, with early and forced marriages, female genital mutilation, increased sexual violence and disrupted nutrition and schooling.
