A MAN DREAMS WITH HIS EYES OPEN explores a quasi-mythical narrative of the ascent—and potential fall—of the human species, in which successful adaptation becomes self-destructive hubris. The title is borrowed from Spinoza's 1677 rationalist treatise ETHICS: "This feeling is called pride, in reference to the man who thinks too highly of himself, and is a species of madness, wherein a man dreams with his eyes open, thinking that he can accomplish all things which fall within the scope of his conception..."
